If you were around back in the 90s, you might remember the Red Ski Tour that used to visit the Alps.
While aerial skiers dressed in red one-pieces would perform flips over a kicker, the MC would shout out cryptic messages for the crowd:
‘I’m not allowed to tell you the name of tonight’s sponsors, but you all know who they are’
The biggest clue was that their logo looked something like this:
That was one way tobacco companies got round advertising bans. These days you’ll rarely see cigarette advertising in any form on the mountain, due to the legal restrictions now in place.
But back in the day, skiing and cigarette advertising were great mates. Here’s a few classics from the archive that we found:
