This week the Alps, Pyrénées and Sierra Nevada have had the unusual experience of seeing their snow turn red.

The occasional warm wind that blows from the other side of the Mediterrean has this week brought with it a layer of Saharan sand.

The results have been confusing, shocking and occasionally beautiful:

In the Sierra Nevada, skiing looks like it’s been filmed with a special filter, so strong is the contrast between the snow above and beneath the surface:
