Nothing says you have no friends more than this photo of Kim Jong-un, smoking a cigarette, sitting on a chairlift, on his own.
This photo was taken in 2013, when Kim took a test ride at the new Masikryong ski resort, built by soldiers from the North Korean army.
Educated in Switzerland, the supreme leader of North Korea developed a love of the mountains at a young age. However, with lift passes costing €40, only a tiny proportion of the North Korea’s population will ever test the lifts.

Putin
It turns out that Kim Jong-un is not the only dictator with a penchant for skiing.
Vladimir Putin loves to show off his love of the outdoors. Many readers will be familiar with his love of bare-chested horse riding.
It might be no surprise to learn that Putin also enjoys skiing, most recently in Sochi – the venue for the 2014 Winter Olympics and an event marred by state-sponsored drug cheating by Russian athletes.
Current circumstances mean he is unlikely to enjoy a ski holiday overseas for some time.

Mussolini
Dictators have enjoyed an association with skiing since before WWII. Like Putin, Italian Fascist and self-regarding egotist, Benito Mussolini recognised that being seen with a pair of skis could be good for his image.
In the 1930’s he loved nothing more than setting an example for dictators to come by stripping off in the snow.

Trump
While not technically a dictator (although he has been accused of doing his best to become one) some commentators have compared the egotism of the first Fascist with this ex-President of the United States.
Donald Trump also enjoys skiing. His first wife, Ivana Trump enjoys telling a story about their first ski trip together to Aspen.
The Donald hadn’t realised that Ivana was an accomplished skier, and set off down the piste, encouraging her to follow. She whizzed past him, making him look like a novice.
“Donald was so angry, he took off his skis and boots and walked up to the restaurant, shouting ‘I’m not going to do this shit.’ He couldn’t take that I could do something better than he did,” said Ivana.

Hitler
Let’s finish with Hitler. He didn’t ski. Or take his shirt off for a photo shoot.
Eva Braun was a keen skier, as was Goering. And the German ski resort of Garmisch still has an uncomfortable and unresolved association with Nazism.
However, fans of the ‘Downfall’ meme will be delighted to discover that Hitler hated it when the back bowls are closed on a fresh powder day…
