The SIA survey is one of the largest snowsports surveys in the world. Their annual report questioned 18,000 US citizens and delivered some interesting data.

Ski Touring is booming

The number of people participating in ski touring has more than tripled from 700,000 to 2.2 million in the last three years.

The closures during the pandemic may have started this boom, but numbers went up by 90% in the last year, so this is more than a fad.

Male dominated

The Snowsports Industries America survey showed that 64% of respondents were male and only 36% female. This mirrors almost exactly the gender balance for ski touring which is 67% male and 33% female.

A youthful sport

The survey suggests that the future is bright for the US market. It reports that 62% of skiers are under 35 years of age and 27% are under 18 years old.

This contrasts to the more mature UK market, which has suffered as schools have pared back ski trips over the last few decades.
