Bode Miller, America’s winningest male skier of all time, recently told The Ski Podcast how his childhood living ‘off grid’ helped him in the US reality show ‘Special Forces’.
In a recent special episode of the podcast, Miller explained:
“Having the freedom to explore and learn about myself through the outdoors gave me a lot of the grit and mental fortitude needed for an experience like ‘Special Forces’.
“You learn a lot about yourself when put in situations like they had us in – and knowing the difference between fear and danger really helped me work through the exercises.”

Groin injury put end to Bode’s ‘Special Forces’
Miller reached the penultimate episode before he was forced to withdraw due to a groin injury:
“Throughout my career, the one thing I couldn’t do was quit. As I’ve grown older, I’ve learned where my limits are.”
The show puts contestants through a variation of the military training tests that applicants for the real US Special Forces have to go through.
It is adapted from the UK reality show ‘SAS: Who Dares Wins’, recently won by Gareth Gates. Some of the staff from the UK show, including Jason Fox and Mark Billingham, also take part in ‘Special Forces’.
