The French ski resorts of Tignes and Sainte-Foy have announced that they plan to join forces, forming a new lift company to be called ALTTA (Alliance Locale pour la Transition des Territoires d’Altitude).

Transition will be complete by June 2026

The new company has already been formed to take over the management of their ski areas but will not take over operations until 01 June 2026.

At this point, ALTTA will replace the existing companies – STGM (Société des Téléphériques de la Grande Motte) and SFTLD (Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise Loisirs Développement).

STGM is itself a subsidiary of Compagnie des Alpes – the largest operator of ski resorts in France.

Olivier Duch, deputy mayor of Tignes, will become chairman of the new board, with Yannick Amet, mayor of Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise, becoming the vice-chair.

For 2025 ALTTA will focus on the transition from the current managers. The stated goal is to become a “mission-driven company, placing people at the heart of its organization”.

Vail Resorts speculation

Since Tignes announced that they would be leaving Compagnie des Alpes in August 2024, there has been considerable speculation that the resort is positioning itself to be acquired by the Vail Resorts group, which is keen to expand in Europe.

Iain discussed this in Episode 218 of The Ski Podcast, which you can listen to here:
