If you were guessing which French ski resort had the most snow last winter, it’s unlikely you’d guess correctly.

Resorts always talk about their micro-climates, caused by being at the end of a valley where the weather systems stop and drop.

But would you have guessed that Les Contamines was the French resort with the most snow last season?

These were the 10 snowiest French ski resorts in 2018/19:

  1. Les Contamines
  2. Val Thorens
  3. Ax 3 Domaines
  4. Val d’Isère
  5. La Plagne
  6. La Rosière
  7. Bonneval sur Arc
  8. Tignes
  9. Flaine
  10. La Toussuire

How’s your microclimate?

What other take-aways can we…erm…take-away from this list?

Well, it makes sense to see both Espace Killy resorts and La Rosière on there. The theory is that every snowstorm that hits the Tarentaise ultimately will reach one of these three resorts (and perhaps Sainte Foy as well).

It’s great to see a resort from the Pyrénées on the list though. We skied in Ax last winter and with Cauterets is one of two favourite resorts from the region.

But how does La Plagne score so highly compared to Les Arcs? And what happened in the southern French alps last winter?

And let’s hope for more snow this winter. November is looking good already!
